We’ve all heard the term “laser like focus” and yet we rarely use this type of focus in our brand and marketing communications.

Why is this? I would like to suggest it’s because we’re afraid. We have a fear that if we focus too much we’ll miss some potential business, a member of our perceived target audience might not identify with our message.

In reality, by not aiming at one specific target we’re likely to hit nothing at all. By speaking the language of everyone we’re really speaking to no one. It’s like being in a crowded room, there might be a lot of noise, but no single conversation can be heard.
